It isn't every day that you see a recipe engraved on a headstone, but Utah grandmother Kay Andrews wanted to make sure her memory lived on far beyond her 97 years. The stone that marks Kay's grave displays a delicious fudge recipe that is reflective of its creator's sweet personality. As someone who was known for being extremely generous, Kay asked that her signature recipe be etched within granite for all to see — and the story (and her recipe) quickly went viral.
Fudge is sensitive to elevation and humidity. If you live in a very humid environment, use 3/4 cup milk.
- 2 squares chocolate (I used a 5 oz bar of dark chocolate)
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup milk
3 cups white granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Pinch of salt
- Melt chocolate squares with butter on low heat.
- Stir in milk until incorporated and bubbling.
- Sift in sugar and salt.
- Add vanilla and stir.
- Continue stirring over heat until the mixture reaches 273 degrees F.
- Remove from heat and pour onto a marble slab. (This helps to cool the fudge evenly.)
- Chill for 3 hours or overnight.
- Cut and serve.
